Mask policies for Kentucky’s public schools are now in the hands of district leaders.
Lawmakers recently voted to end a statewide mask mandate for public schools, keeping the requirement in place until Friday, when districts are expected to have determined their own mask policy.
Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend universal masking inside K-12 schools, regardless of a person’s vaccination status.
As of Wednesday afternoon, at least 122 of Kentucky’s 171 school districts have said they will continue to require masks. More than 85% of Kentucky’s public school students attend a district that will require universal masking.
One district — Science Hill Independent — said it would make masks optional.
The remaining districts either haven’t announced a policy decision or The Courier Journal does not yet have information of their decision.
