Councilwoman requests to rename Nashville airport after Oprah

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – TV legend Oprah Winfrey has roots in Nashville that could soon stretch to Nashville International Airport.

A Metro Councilwoman is proposing changing the name of the city’s main airport to Oprah G. Winfrey International Airport.

Winfrey graduated from East High School and Tennessee State University before she launched her successful media career.

POLL: Should Nashville International Airport be named after Oprah Winfrey?

But this change will not be up to the council, it would be the airport authority board who gets the final say.

Councilwoman Sharon Hurt is behind the proposal and reportedly approached the airport board with a letter to its chairman on Nov. 5.

Airport policy reportedly states an individual must be deceased for at least two years and have made a substantial contribution to the airport or field of aviation to have building or facility named after them.
